MANILA - Majority of senators present in Monday's session voted in favor of a resolution urging the Supreme Court to determine the Senate's role in the cancellation of treaties.

MANILA - Majority of senators present in Monday's session voted in favor of a resolution urging the Supreme Court to determine the Senate's role in the cancellation of treaties.

Twelve senators backed Senate President Vicente Sotto III's resolution no. 337 that is expected to "settle once and for all" debates on whether Senate approval is needed before a president cancel a treaty. Seven lawmakers abstained from voting, while 2 others came to session late and were not able to register their respective votes.

"We are just asking the Supreme Court to decide once and for all. It is simply asking the interpretation of the Supreme Court," Sotto told his colleagues, noting that the resolution made "no mention of any specific issue."Under the Constitution, Senate concurrence is required before the executive branch can enter into an accord, but the law remains "silent" on whether senators need to approve the president's decision to withdraw from a pact.
