Megga Foods and Stockfarm Inc., according to the closure order of the Business Permits and License Office of the city, did not reply to the show cause order issued last Aug. 22 and that they received on Oct. 10 last year.
Officials said the privately-owned slaughterhouse continued to operate without a sanitary permit, Public Employment Service Office certificate, and wastewater discharge permit. “That is why from the basis of the show cause order that the slaughterhouse did not reply to, and also the cease and desist order of the DENR , we now had the legal basis to shut down the slaughterhouse,” San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said.
DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu and Zamora personally went to the slaughterhouse, but no owner or employee showed up. The mayor said that they saw how dirty the slaughterhouse was, collecting their waste in sacks, as well as blood and pieces of meat found in their canals. He also said they are a major factor in the pollution of San Juan River.Zamora said DENR officials going around the San Juan River detected a bad odor, which turned out to be emanating from the slaughterhouse.
