A P100 billion supplemental budget will be needed by the government to finance relief and rehabilitation efforts for Southern Tagalog provinces devastated by the Taal volcano eruption.

Albay Rep. Joey Sarte-Salceda, chairman of the House committee on ways and means, said the approval of additional disaster funds appeared inevitable as he noted that the approved 2020 allocation may not be enough.

Salceda, who represents the congressional district where Mayon volcano is located, said he is convinced the Taal assistance fund alone will require between P60 to P100 billion. The senior administration lawmaker said Congress will try to provide an additional allotment after members of the bicameral conference committee last December slashed P9 billion from the country’s disaster funds under the 2020 National Budget.

Cayetano said Congress has approved a P16 billion allocation for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund for 2020, with P3.3 billion of that amount to go to aid and relief for communities affected by calamities and P4.2 billion to repair and rehabilitation projects.

Post-Taal, Poe pushes for creation of new department for disaster managementSenator Grace Poe has stressed anew the need for a single disaster management department following the eruption of Taal Volcano last Sunday. It's a no brainer. Noon pa man we suffer from all these natural calamities and yet no govt officials were taking the initiative to do this. Tuwing meron lang ganitong scenario saka naiisip. 🙈 Can’t we just revisit and improve whatever it is that we now have in place? We’re so good with starting up a project but we always fail with the follow through - no proper implementation, evaluation & feedback. 😓 paulit-ulit lang There use to be one. Pina sera ni Duterte at kinuha ang funding at nilagay sa intel niya.
