Defining the News

MOSCOW – Russia’s military said Wednesday it had seen a surge in people signing up to fight in Ukraine since a deadly terror attack on a Moscow concert hall last month.

“Over the last week and a half, military recruitment points have recorded a significant increase in the number of those wishing to sign contracts with the Russian defence ministry to take part in the special military operation,” the defense ministry said Wednesday. The ministry said more than 100,000 people had voluntarily signed up to fight so far in 2024 — including 16,000 in the 10 days after the attack.

But Putin and Russian officials have continued to link the attack with Ukraine and its Western backers.
