Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) chairman and human rights lawyer Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno said the Philippine National Police (PNP) shouldn’t have arrested those who participated in the “Pride” rally in Manila on Friday, June 26.

“The arrest of those who joined Metro Manila Pride violates the Public Assembly Act, which says: ‘No person can be punished or held criminally liable for participating in or attending an otherwise peaceful assembly’,” read Diokno’s latest social media post.

The Manila Police District arrested at least 20 persons who participated at the Pride March held at Mendiola on Friday. The MPD said the rallyists were arrested for illegal assembly in violation of Batas Pambasa Blg. 880 or the Public Assembly Act of 1985 as well as for non-cooperation in violation of Republic Act 11332 or the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Health Concern Act.

Aside from Diokno, human rights group Karapatan also criticized the PNP’s actions against the Pride March.
