A pulmonary specialist sounded the alarm over the prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in the country.

The COPD is currently the seventh leading cause of mortality in the country, said Dr. Lenora Fernandez, who is a pulmonary specialist and the immediate past-president of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians .

“COPD can become apparent in smokers 10 to 20 years after the start of smoking. With the number of Filipinos smoking still high, the prevalence of COPD in the country will continue to grow in the next 10 to 20 years also,” said Fernandez. “COPD patients suffer breathlessness and chronic cough, severely affecting lifestyle and productivity,” said Fernandez.

“Hopefully, the DOH will provide spirometers to all hospitals maintained by LGUs, using funding from the UHC Act,” she said.

PH’s dismal educational performance worries senatorsSenators on Thursday raised concern about the Philippines' dismal performance in mathematics, science and reading as revealed in the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), offering solutions to improve the quality of education in the country. 3 possible solutions to improve Ph dismal educ performance: 1. more classrooms; lower teacher-student ratio = budget; 2. more QUALITY teachers & better textbooks = budget; 3. intensive year-round teacher training = budget. Rather than adding 2 more years to our basic education program, we should instead, have poured resources & strengthen the previous educational system. K-12 was just adding to more school years of pasang awa graduates. PNoy focused on quantity, not the quality.
