Post-Taal, Poe pushes for creation of new department for disaster management

In an interview over radio DZMM Tuesday, Poe said the recent eruption of Taal Volcano emphasizes the need for the creation of a permanent government agency to focus on calamities and disasters.

“Dahil nga marami na ring nangyayaring mga kalamidad sa ating bansa, ay napapanahon na na magkaroon ng isang departamento na tututok sa tatlong bagay: ang pag-iwas sa pagkakaroon ng trahedya, lalung-lalo na kapag may kalamidad; ang pagbibigay ng tamang responde pagka nagkaroon ng kalamidad; at ang pangatlo, na madalas ay nakakaligtaaan, ang rehabilitasyon pagkatapos ng isang kalamidad,” Poe said.

While the inter-agency National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has been performing its mandate, Poe noted the lack of an authority to be primarily be responsible and accountable for disaster response and management.

Dept of Disaster Management? What should be planned is the relocation of those living near the seashore, and an honest to goodness management of seepages, creeks and rivers to prevent flooding. This would minimize costly undertakings year in and year out during typhoons

Can’t we just revisit and improve whatever it is that we now have in place? We’re so good with starting up a project but we always fail with the follow through - no proper implementation, evaluation & feedback. 😓 paulit-ulit lang

It's a no brainer. Noon pa man we suffer from all these natural calamities and yet no govt officials were taking the initiative to do this. Tuwing meron lang ganitong scenario saka naiisip. 🙈
