The Department of Health (DOH) assured that the Philippines is ready in dealing with the new COVID-19 virus variant which has already been detected in the country.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that the government continues to strengthen its responses against the pandemic.

“We are not defenseless…Yung ating dating ginagawa for the last 11 or 12 months—-pinaigting natin ito sa mga dumaan na panahon [What we are doing for the last 11 or 12 months–we have intensified them over time],” he said.

On Wednesday night, the DOH announced the detection of the new COVID-19 virus variant that was first discovered in the United Kingdom. It has been detected after samples from a 29-year-old Filipino who returned to the Philippines from the United Arab Emirates on Jan. 7 yielded positive genome sequencing results. The DOH said that the patient is a resident of Kamuning, Quezon City.
