The OCTA Research Group says new infections could go higher than 30,000 today, the day after it broke its record for the biggest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases.

"While cases continue to climb in the NCR , Calabarzon, and Central Luzon, cases are also starting to increase in many other parts of the country," he added.

Data from the Health Department showed most infections recorded on Jan. 8 were from Metro Manila with 16,233. The provinces of Cavite and Rizal followed with 1,947 and 1,707, respectively. Bulacan had 1,308 fresh cases while Laguna had 1,136. Aside from provinces in Calabarzon and Central Luzon, there were areas in Ilocos, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, and Davao that each recorded over 100 new infections.
