The Philippine General Hospital (PGH) is bracing for another round of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) surge amid looming threat from the more transmissible Delta variant.

“We are bracing and anticipating for a possible surge so we are trying to cover all bases. First, we’re looking at our facilities, looking at the ventilation of the hospital, improving the COVID wards,” PGH Spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario said in an interview with CNN Philippines late Friday, July 23.

Del Rosario added that PGH is also upgrading some of its rooms and ordering more equipment to “beef up the supply.” “We’re making sure that oxygen supply will be enough. We’re making sure also that all of our health workers who haven’t been vaccinated to get the jab,” he added. About 85 percent of PGH health workers are fully vaccinated, they were given either Sinovac or AstraZeneca vaccines.

“We’re also going to open, in the near future, our new emergency room and about two to three weeks from now, we’ll be adding a COVID-19 facility [with] about 40 beds to accommodate more patients.”The Philippines has so far recorded 47 cases of the Delta variant, 23 of which are local cases.
