Panelo: Press freedom won’t die even if ABS-CBN shuts down

Malacañang believes that freedom of expression and of the press will stay even if broadcast media giant ABS-CBN shuts down, saying there are other media outfits that can freely operate.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo (OPS / MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) ABS-CBN’s franchise, which is facing challenges in Congress and the Supreme Court, expires on March 30. In an interview with ANC, ABS-CBN’s English news channel, presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo expressed frustration over those who are trying to link the issue of ABS-CBN’s franchise with press freedom, saying there was no connection at all. “Pagpalagay natin na mawala ang ABS-CBN, are you telling me namatay na ang freedom of expression and of the press? Of course not. Ang daming networks, ang daming radyo, nandiyan pa rin (Assuming that ABS-CBN will shut down, are you telling me that freedom of expression and of the press will die with it? Of course not. There are many networks, there are radio stations, all of them are still there),” he said Friday. “There’s no curtailing there. If you violate a provision of the law that will be the result of your violation, how can that be?” he added. “The very grounds for quo warrranto do not even touch your rights to criticize, to make editorials, ‘di ba? So anong koneksyon? ‘Di wala (right? So what’s the connection? There’s none),” he continued. The renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise is yet to be tackled by Congress despite its impending expiration. Its franchise is also being questioned by Solicitor General Jose Calida before the Supreme Court, citing abuse of their license. Panelo called on the House of Representatives to just do its job and stop waiting for the President’s instructions. However, he said it was up to the courts to determine if the Lower House was violating the law by stalling the hearing of ABS-CBN’s franchise. “Why does the Speaker have to take the cue from Malacañang? Why do members of Congress have to wait for what the President will say about anything? It’s about time… If that was the practice before, tigilan na po natin ‘yan (they should stop that),” he said. “That’s for the courts kung meron silang (if there is a) violation. Kahit yung away nila (Even their disagreement), I will not even join the fray. Nag-aaway sila ngayon, eh. Sabi ng Senado, pwede sila. Sabi naman ng Congress (They are debating now. The Senate said ABS-CBN can continue operating beyond March 30, the House of Representatives does not think so),” he added. Panelo said they were not channeling Pontius Pilate when talking about ABS-CBN’s franchise. Malacañang has repeatedly urged those concerned with the franchise renewal to “do their job.” “The Constitution demarcates your powers, your duties. Yun ang ginagawa ng Presidente (That’s what the President is doing). ‘Kung ano lang yung trabaho ko, ‘yan (I will only do my job).’,” Panelo said. He added that Duterte will only step in if there is an abuse of power or injustice. “He cannot countenance any illegality, any violation of any law, and he is outraged by any kind of oppression or injustice,” Panelo said. The arrogance of Joker Panelo! Press freedom will not end with the closure of ABS-CBN. It will, however, embolden this narcissistic administration to persecute critical journalists and individuals. This closure will be the death knell of adverse views and mindset. Those employees of ABS-CBN who will be jobless with the closure of the company are deprived of press freedom at least temporarily.

whta he said, makes sense..
