Palace tells US lawmakers: You’re no longer our masters

Malacañang on Thursday reminded United States lawmakers that the Philippines is no longer under their rule and asked them to not interfere with the country’s affairs, particularly its new anti-terrorism legislation.Presidential spokesman Harry Roque made the statement after at least 45 representatives of the US Congress called on the Philippine government to immediately repeal the controversial Anti-Terror Law.“‘Wag na po kayo maghimasok. Hindi na po namin kayo colonial masters.

According to Roque, the fate of the controversial measure, which has received its ninth petition against, was up to the country’s Supreme Court.“We have a working judicial system and we can rely on our judicial system to rule on the constitutionality of the Anti-Terror Law,” he added. President Duterte signed Republic Act No. 11479 or the Anti-Terrorism Law early this month despite calls to junk it because of supposedly unconstitutional provisions that violate human rights and are prone to abuse.

According to Roque, Malacanang will let the Supreme Court decide on the legal challenge against the measure and will respect whatever its ruling. He said that the signing of the law demonstrated the government’s commitment to stamp out terrorism, which “has long plagued the country and has caused unimaginable grief and horror to many of our people.”
