The coronavirus disease reproduction number or rate of infection in the country is further down to 0.52, with a seven-day average in cases of 5,451, OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David said in a tweet on Saturday, Oct. 23.In a Teleradyo interview on Sunday, Oct. 24, David attributed the steady decline of COVID-19 cases in the country to the increasing number of fully vaccinated individuals.
“Isa sa madaling paliwanag ay medyo marami na tayong nabakunahan. Aside from that, meron ding may dala ng antibodies dahil previously infected na sila ,” David said. “Pag pinagsama natin ito, maaaring hindi pa siguro tayo nasa herd immunity, pero medyo malapit na tayo. Nasa population protection na tayo [sa Metro Manila] ,” he added.
The government has revised its herd immunity target for the entire country from 70 percent to 80-90 percent by vaccinating 77 million by the end of 2021 and 90 million by the first quarter of 2022. Based on the government data as of Oct. 20, there were 24.49 million Filipinos that have completed their COVID-19 shots.Metro Manila has the most number of fully vaccinated individuals at 7.89 million, which is 80.78 percent of the goal of 9.77 million.
