MANILA - Citing low wages and poor working conditions in the Philippines, a group of nurses on Thursday reiterated its appeal to the government to allow more medical workers to work abroad next year,

if not to fully lift the overseas deployment ban.

On average, there are at least 13,000 nurses who leave for abroad each year, Andamo said, as many still face delayed salaries, inadequate benefits, non-payment of hazard pay and have no security of tenure in the country. "With these issues, nurses are not encouraged or enticed to work and stay here in the Philippines," Andamo said.

"They are just waiting to be tapped and maximized in order so they can be part of this COVID-19 response," she added.
