Department of Health (DOH) secretary-turned-congresswoman Janette Loreto-Garin has asked Filipinos not to discriminate out of fear or ignorance over the existence of the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

“I also want to encourage people not to discriminate [against] sick people and Chinese tourists. Pushing them away will only make them hide if they have symptoms,” she said in a statement Monday.

Garin, who belongs to the House minority bloc, called on the DOH to “immediately come forward and refute every fake news” regarding the new coronavirus. Garin offered her perspective on 2019-nCoV as compared to other dreaded communicable diseases of years past.
