The NBA on Tuesday named Michael Ma as China chief executive, tasked with repairing relations after Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted in support of Hong Kong protesters last October. Ma, who takes over from American Derek Chang, worked previously for the NBA and played a key role in building its brand in China. He takes over on June 1.
"The smartest thing would be to just fire Morey and for the NBA to officially apologize, otherwise nothing changes," said one posting.The nationalistic Global Times newspaper published a report late Tuesday with the headline:"Naming native Chinese as NBA China boss 'not enough' to win mainland market back.”The league had said in April that Chang, appointed in 2018, was leaving to spend more time with his family, making no mention of the China spat.
I recall the NBA surrendered on this one ...
