'Maring' damage to agriculture hits P1.87B

Agricultural damage and losses from Tropical Storm 'Maring' rose to P1.87 billion, the Department of Agriculture said on Sunday.The agency said 'Maring' damaged 69,868 hectares of agricultural areas and 91,407 metric tons of produce.The storm affected 60,195 farmers and fishers.

Among hard-hit areas are Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Mimaropa , Bicol Region, Western Visayas, and Soccsksargen Bulk of the damage and losses were from the rice sector, amounting to P1.4 billion.The corn sector incurred damage and losses worth P144.9 million.The Agriculture department assured farmers and fishermen that assistance will be given through the Quick Response Fund to rehabilitate affected areas.
