Brig. Gen. Tomas Apolinario, director of the MIMAROPA regional police, said the crocodile that attacked Junick Husin was so aggressive that it even destroyed the banca he and his companion was riding in.
Apolinario said Husin and his companion were with Edgar Legazpi and were on their way back home from fishing when they encountered a large crocodile in the waters of Barangay Salang in Balabac at around 7:30 p.m. “According to the survivor Edgar Legazpi, the crocodile split their banca into two. During their struggle, he said he saw the crocodile already biting the victim on the head,” said Apolinario.Lt. Col. Socrates Faltado, MIMAROPA regional police spokesman, said Legazpi then went to the local authorities to seek assistance for the rescue of Husin. The victim’s body was recovered on Wednesday.
A number of residents of Balabac town and nearby areas became victims of crocodile attack over the years. Experts said the attack could be attributed to the human invasion of the natural habitat of the saltwater crocodile in the area.
