Anakalusugan Party-list Rep. Mike Defensor in a statement urged the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases to reconsider the annual supply of Filipino health professionals that are allowed to go abroad. Ronnie Ong told CNN Philippines’ News Night on Tuesday. "As far as we're concerned, there's really no point in restraining our healthcare workers from leaving for abroad, if we can't provide them good-paying jobs here at home," he said in the statement. But then you hear from them about the need to reopen the economy,” Binay said in an interview over Radio DZRH. "If they've already received hiring notices from foreign employers, we should just allow them to leave," Defensor added. He also noted a lack of synergy among members of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, the policy-making body in government’s COVID-19 response. Defensor also expressed worries about possible exploitation from securing overseas employment certificates to point of departure in immigration counters if the IATF still pursues this move. “Huwag muna tayo magkumpiyansa, lalo na pagdating sa kalusugan ng mga kabataan dahil delikado pa po.

The IATF late last year said the move was needed given the"national demand" for healthcare workers amid the pandemic. Compared to its Southeast Asian neighbors, the country’s number of infections continues to climb while theirs are now under control, he pointed out. Binay said senators are just asking the IATF to consider Congress’ appeal for a very limited face-to-face classes in places where there is zero or very few COVID-19 cases. The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration in December said the supply cap would begin this year. . May problema talaga tayo (We really have a problem),” he said.
