MANILA, Philippines – As ABS-CBN’s broadcasts remain shut, an international rights body has reminded President Rodrigo Duterte and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) that the

its free television and radio programs on May 5, as NTC issued a cease-and-desist order (CDO) against the network a day after its franchise expired.NTC insisted that they cannot allow the beleaguered network to continue operating while franchise talks in Congress are ongoing because unlike other broadcasting firms, there are

questions on the validityof ABS-CBN’s franchise. But even if questions are present, ICHRP says that NTC should lift the CDO because even some of President Rodrigo Duterte’s allies have supported the resumption of the broadcast operation.“It is clear from the very broad protests at the closure of ABS-CBN that this decision has no support outside President Duterte’s inner circle. The NTC can fix this now by acting on its statement to Congress to provide a temporary extension of the network’s franchise while Congress debated the Bills to renew the 25-year franchise,” Murphy noted.

While several personalities aligned with the administration have pushed for the renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise, Solicitor General Jose Calida — a ranking official close to the President — was revealed to be the person who advised NTC, as a client, to refrain from giving a provisional authority.

Prior to this issue, Calida also filed a quo warranto petition against ABS-CBN for supposedly hiding foreign ownership behind a corporate veil.ICHRP says that these actions from the government would give an appearance that a dictatorship is ongoing.ADVERTISEMENT

“This is arbitrary government, smacking of dictatorship, and underlines the extreme situation of lawlessness and impunity which the Filipino people suffer today,” Murphy explained.Recently, the House of Representatives junked a bill that would have given ABS-CBN the authority to operate until October 2020. GabrielLaluINQ Press freedom? Abs cbn was very obvious in manipulating facts based on their biased news.Noticed it several times. A network with questionable integrity. Its very sad. Knowing they have a huge impact to the viewers yet still chooses to distort the truth. Well God is watching you. GabrielLaluINQ Ano kayang parusa pag di sumonod sa pinirmahang covenant on press freedom? Kung admonition lang from the UN members, balewala yan kay dutz. Doat mas mabigat ang parusa. Lets say, economic embargo, etc.

GabrielLaluINQ To said International Right Body: The issue isn’t all about press freedom. C’mon! Please research the issue before releasing ang official comment. Kailangan talaga kumita! GabrielLaluINQ notoabscbnshotdown defendpressfreedom

GabrielLaluINQ Kafekfekan yan claim to press freedom. Apply the Constitution therefore. No franchise...no operation. Expired. Not renewed! Nothing to extend. Whose fault is that? GabrielLaluINQ abs-cbn continues to have the freedom to air programs on tv plus and internet GabrielLaluINQ So ? Nananakot ? 🙄🙄🙄

GabrielLaluINQ Dumb. The issue is not press freedom, but technical. Go to Iran, Syria or North Korea instead! GabrielLaluINQ GabrielLaluINQ We all know DU30 doesn't give a sh*t about int'l reminders GabrielLaluINQ expired na ang LTO registration ko.. so sisihin ko b dpt ang LTO o ang sarili ko sa kawalan ng aksyon pra mgparenew?! YesToABSCBNShutdown NoToDilawan

GabrielLaluINQ What has the UN covenant on Press freedom anything to do with the case of ABSCBN? And ano pakialam nila sa NTC? Ipagpatuloy nyo pa yan bias style nyo lalo kayong mahihirapan marenew. I suggest ibenta nyo na yan company nyo to save your employee habang maaga pa. Well goodluck.😏

GabrielLaluINQ Only duterte has freedom to press.... Not press freedom. GabrielLaluINQ This ABS-CBN was shutdown DUE TO EXPIRATION OF FRANCHISE and FREEDOM OF THE PRESS IS NOT THE ISSUE HERE! ONLY STUPID PEOPLE WILL BELIEVE TO THIS CIRCUS PROPAGANDA OF THIS BIASED STATION! No wonder MAJORITY of the Filipinos support ABS-CBN shutdown!

Okayyyyy. Ulit-ulitin nyo. Baka may maniwala sa inyo. 😂 GabrielLaluINQ hahaha dami dds dito GabrielLaluINQ Was the shutting down of abs-cbn an issue of press freedom or an expired franchise? I’m confused.

These pipol lose their own judgment di lang empathy.

GabrielLaluINQ Press freedom? If there's an issue with press freedom, GMA and TV5 shouldn't be operating also, and other media companies. This is not an issue of press freedom but a franchise issue. GabrielLaluINQ FYI lang pala. Ok thanks. Bye.

Here we go again, international rights body. So, anong kalokohan oh isyu pinagsasabi nyu! Istupido

GabrielLaluINQ Philippine SC has just voted 14 -0 (fourteen - zero) against ABS TRO asking to re -open. I think it justified the NTC order to close ABS. Why can't you include it also in your report? Or is it hard to tell the truth?

GabrielLaluINQ Hindi ba sila nakakapag broadcast? Kaso ba ito ng predd freedom?

Advising NTC is not meddling in ABS-CBN franchise issue – OSGABS-CBN may have to start letting go some of its 11,000 employees in August if Congress fails to grant its application for franchise renewal soon, its president and CEO Carlo Katigbak told the Senate. Hindi kasalanan ng Gobyerno yan. PAGKUKULANG Yan ng ABS CBN Management. WAG NYUNG Isisi sa iba ang PAGKAKAMALI Nyu!!! This government just tested the people. No uprising during the abscbn shutdown just means they can continue doing their shit. So as long as Filipinos don't do something about it, nothing will happen. This incompetent corrupt government is playing you all. OustDuterteNow
