But it was 3 days later that the first sustained clashes broke out between protesters and riot police firing tear gas outside the city's legislature. On Friday night, thousands answered online calls to gather at 8:00 pm in local malls and neighborhoods to chant pro-democracy slogans and sing"Glory to Hong Kong" – a protest anthem that became hugely popular during the turmoil.
In the district of Kwun Tong, live broadcasts showed a man with a knife being subdued by protesters and then police. Police said the man had stabbed another person and was arrested.Demonstrators are pushing for an inquiry into police brutality, an amnesty for the roughly 9,000 people arrested over the protests and universal suffrage.Last month it unveiled plans to impose a new national security law on Hong Kong targeting subversion, succession, terrorism and foreign interference.
The rallies since Beijing announced its national security law plans have been smaller and less violent than last year.
