UPDATED at 1:27 a.m. July 27, 2021AFTER 97 years, the Philippines finally won its first Olympic gold medal on Monday when Hidilyn Diaz ruled the women's 55-kilogram weightlifting event and made history. The 4-foot-11 Diaz lifted a total of 224 kilograms , setting an Olympic record. She smashed her personal best to see off world record holder Liao Qiuyun of China who had to settle for silver.
She also became the second Filipino athlete to win two Olympic medals, following the great swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso who won two bronze medals - one each from the 1928 Amsterdam and the 1932 Los Angeles Games.Diaz's Olympic conquest will likely serve as a fitting end to her Olympic career, which started when she was 17 years old in the 2008 Beijing Games. She also competed in the 2012 London Olympics.
Congratulations Ms. Hidilyn Diaz for winning the first-ever Olympic gold medal for our country (Philippines) at the major international sporting event in our Planet Earth! Mabuhay ang Pilipino! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! 👏👍🙂
I am so happy for her and for your country! YAY!
Is she from Olongapo? I remember PI it was our favorite port of call, that and Thailand, we had big fun there. They could have used her to throw drunken sailors and Marines out of bars every night. Glad she won though!
YES! That is so wonderful.
Mamasattva representing the strong women!
