SEN. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Thursday asked Malacañang for a one-time “bayanihan” financial assistance to cities and municipalities to help them respond to the needs of their constituents during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.“Let us help the local government units in protecting their communities at this time. Additional funds would be a great help for LGUs in responding to the growing needs of the people now,” he said.

He said the law had already given the necessary authority and flexibility to the government to utilize the funds to respond to Covid-19. He explained that only the cities and municipalities would be entitled to the aid to avoid duplication. “Provinces and barangay have the same constituencies, anyway. They are already covered. The grant may be released through the Bureau of the Treasury using the same bank accounts for the IRA shares of the LGUs,” Go said.

It can also cover food, transportation and accommodation expenses of medical personnel and other LGU personnel involved in activities related to the Covid emergency; lease or rental of quarantine centers; and other necessary expenses.
