Fish kill due to dolomite? 'Imposible po 'yan', says DENR official

tv MANILA - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources denied Friday that the fish mortality reported in the Baseco area was caused by the crushed dolomite used for the Manila Bay makeover project.

“Kung ang fish kill nangyari sa area po natin, doon po pupunta ang mga isdang patay doon po sa area natin, which is 'yun po ang pinaka-catchbasin lalo na’t ganitong mayroong habagat,” he said in an interview on ABS-CBN TeleRadyo. “Gaya last year, Oct. 10, 2019 nangyari din po 'yan kung saan naglutangan ang mga isda dito naman sa parte ng Parañaque na bumagsak po 'yung 6 milligram per liter po dapat na dissolved oxygen level, bumagsak ng .02 kung kaya’t namatay ang mga isda nung tayo ay nagwater sampling,” he said.

But he said they are not discounting other possibilities for the fish kill including the use of cyanide in fishing and sabotage.

Water sampling result was low DO, or low dissolved oxygen. Low DO is caused by pollution. Usually this happens on the first big rain of the year and all the bacteria being washed from the street. The bacteria uses all oxygen available suffocating the fish.

Maaaring hindi sa dolomite....the real problem why fishes are dying is because Manila Bay is so dirty and polluted.

Tilapia are fresh water fish. their deaths are not caused by dolomite poisoning but maybe the increase of salinity of the water.

Ok d sila namatay dhil sa dolomite. Pero anyare sa dolomite? Na-washed away ba? Na-washed out? D ba kinondulta nyo mga engineers?

It's kind of ironic that a department who supposed to protect the environment is the one causing damage.

It's fishkill due to incompetence! Dapat inuna ang improvement of water quality, sewage treatment and garbage collection at hindi ang dolomite na wala sa priorities ng Manila Bay Rehab project! Si Antiporda yan! Dapat imbestigahan!

There is a danger in killing fish when hydrated dolomite are applied to the water. But most settle to the bottom without dissolving or reacting. The hydroxide resulting from the portion of the dolomite that dissolves reacts with carbon dioxide in the water becoming bicarbonate.
