A Roman Catholic Church leader called on the faithful “to prepare for the coming of Jesus in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic” as Christendom marks the First Sunday of Advent today.

“The First Sunday of Advent is the New Year in the liturgical calendar of the Church. Advent is from the Latin word ‘advenire’ which means to come. With the celebration of the Advent season, the Church prepares for the coming of our Lord Jesus who came 2,020 years ago. Thus, this season of Advent, we are reminded “not to lose heart because the Lord’s coming is near” ,” said Balanga Bishop Ruperto C. Santos.

“So, as we clean our body, we also have to be clean with our words and deeds. We have to be clean from the inside. Our soul must be pure from selfishness and sins. We cleanse ourselves from infidelity and from indifference. To be clean is to conform ourselves with the ways of Jesus. Cleanliness in spirit is to configure ourselves with His will, reliving in us His own life,” Santos said.

“We must also be available to Jesus and accept Him unconditionally. With this COVID-19 pandemic, we come to realize that it is only God whom we really need. To Him we must turn to and trust. We now learn that God truly matters. He is the only one who can solve our problems and this pandemic. He is our salvation. Let us now take Him in our hearts. Make God our priority, our first in life. Among all other things and above anyone else, we must choose God.
