Ex-Bayan Muna congressman asks for court protection

Philippines Headlines News

Philippines Latest News, Philippines Headlines

—A former congressman of the Bayan Muna party-list has asked a local court here for protection after being accused by the military of being a high-ranking officer of the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing New People’s Army .Siegfred Deduro, who served as congressman of the party-list in the 12 Congress, filed a petition of writ of amparo before a regional trial court late this week as he continued to feel threatened by state forces.

This was in response to the June accusation of Maj. Gen. Eric Vinoya, commanding general of the Philippine Army’s Third Infantry Division , that Deduro was a leading officer of the CPP-NPA in Panay Island. Deduro has vehemently denied this, and denounced the accusations made by Vinoya and the 3ID hierarchy as lies.

“The accusations of the military against Deduro are false and malicious. These false accusations amount to red-tagging, or the vilification or labeling of persons or organizations as communist, making them targets of government military or para-military units,” said the Bayan Muna-Panay Chapter in a statement.

Deduro also wrote a letter to Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr., asking for a report wherein Vinoya made the statement during a meeting of the Iloilo Provincial Peace and Order Council.
