“I am a product of the public elementary school system and whenever we get books I read in advance and read aloud in my room. I used to pretend like I was a newscaster and read the instructions in chapter summary tests, mimicking their tone. Since books in the public schools are handed down to generations upon generations of students—lent at the beginning of the school year and returned after, these copies were always battered, sometimes missing or had frayed pages.
