’s extensive studies of new geographies and ‘worlding,’ she challenges the concept of centrality and the core-periphery relationship of the EuroAmerican against the ‘Third World’ developing countries, and says that where knowledge is produced matters.

These studies help us understand the two sides of the story. More importantly, these push us to research, and to write the truths of our story, truths that may be absent or disfigured in the colonial portrayals we see. It is also the sadly fascinating topic that creeps over lunch conversations and wine nights while I am studying in London. Sometimes, you get ignorant comments from people, like “You Filipinos have Spanish names; I know a friend named ‘Torres’ then you’re ‘Palma.’ So unique how you were colonized by the Spanish for a couple of years.” Some people respectfully ask about it. Some wouldn’t even know anything about the Philippines.

Some would remind us how much we do not know about prehispanic Philippines; colonization might as well have happened between and among our datus, and across the Austronesian peoples, blurring our dogma of an original tribespeople and Western colonialism. Some, however, would say: Decolonize; work towards a common understanding outside colonial ideologies. In research, decolonization has growing voices, and is looking into different fields.

[OPINION] The anger toward the ‘Elcano & Magellan’ film is unjustifiedThe film is not about the Philippines, even though some of the most important events of that incredible journey happened in this archipelago. This SO WRONG on SO MANY LEVELS! Who would even allow this to be published? And publishing an opinion piece from a foreigner who's only been here since 2009 but is an ''expert'' about PH history? Do you not see how that's a problem? 1 of the main arguments is: TAKE. THIS. DOWN. You just published the opinion of an apologist for colonial Spain.

Teaser, poster for 'Elcano and Magellan' movie draw flak in the Philippines – and rightfully so'Stop depicting colonizers as good guys.' 🙅🏽‍♂️ Imagine a world where Europeans did not colonize. Everyone would be living in bamboo mudhuts and wearing grass skirts!!! No high tech societies in the 3rd world. If colonizers are so bad then why do black and brown people want to move to the West and be ruled by white people I challenge every OFW and expat to come back to the PHL because white people bad. But they won't do it because they know white western society is a million times better than the joke that is the PHL. Watch the Batuka music video YouTubube and see the ghosts of slave ships in Cape Verde inspire a type of 'rebellious' music.
