Health Secretary Francisco Duque III maintains that the government is still proactive in its pandemic response, despite the threat brought by the more contagious COVID-19 Delta variant in the country.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III maintained on Thursday that the government is still proactive in its pandemic response, despite the threat brought by the more contagious COVID-19 Delta variant in the country."The fact that we still have low numbers of Delta variant is already proof in itself that the Philippine Genome Center has been doing a good job of really identifying or detecting among the positive samples of the different variants," he added.

The PGC is asking for at least ₱50 million for each satellite office in the Visayas and Mindanao to boost its genome sequencing capability. The amount will help each facility sequence 50 samples per week and improve the turnaround time of results. The country was able to sequence 9,351 samples or 0.86% of around 1 million cases from January to July this year, the PGC previously said.

The government also intends to increase COVID-19 ICU beds in anticipation of the surge, boost vaccine supply, and continue strict border controls, he added.
