DOST lauds 1,000 scholar-volunteers in COVID19 fight

MANILA - More than 1,000 scholars of the Department of Science and Technology have volunteered in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the agency said Sunday.

The volunteers partake in relief operations, data encoding and validation, production of personal protective equipment and alcohol, and community safety assistance. Biyo said the scholars had assisted in data validation for the government's cash aid distribution, development of online tracking mechanism for persons under investigation and monitoring for the COVID-19, and providing food and relief to babies.

Some Filipino scientists who returned from abroad to Iloilo and scholars from the University of San Agustin are also doing epidemiological modelling of COVID-19, Biyo said. Biyo also credited Shana Genavia, a DOST Scholar, who was part of the DNA sequencing core facility that helped validate the COVID-19 test kit developed by the University of the Philippines - National Institutes of Health .
