MANILA - Fifty-two convicts who surrendered to authorities to comply with President Rodrigo Duterte's ultimatum will be freed again, a justice official said Friday.
Justice spokesman Markk Perete said the Bureau of Corrections will release some convicts who surrendered to authorities after they had been freed, including the 52 prisoners, since they had been granted parole and were not heinous-crime offenders. More than 2,100 convicts surrendered after Duterte had ordered inmates who were freed under the controversial good conduct time allowance law to turn themselves in to authorities.
The GCTA, which allows inmates to be released early depending on their behavior, has been criticized for including serious offenders.
