DILG seeks guidance of disaster council on closure of Tagaytay City business establishments

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said it will seek the advice of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) after some local officials in Taal Volcano eruption-affected areas failed to comply with the department’s order closing business establishments in Tagaytay City.

Life still going on for the fishermen in Brgy. Banadero, Aplaya, Tanauan, Batangas as they catch fish despite the warning of the immense explosion of the Taal Volcano. (ALI VICOY / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) DILG Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III said the DILG order on the closure of business establishments in Tagaytay City was made as the hazardous eruption alert still remains over Taal Volcano, with the department having the supervising authority of local chief executives. Densing said the guidance the DILG sought from the NDRRMC is necessary as the agency is composed of the heads of the defense, social welfare, health, finance, energy, and other government departments where pressing matters can be discussed appropriately. With the discussion, Densing said elevating the DILG’s concern to the government’s disaster risk reduction council will allow them to decide whether to allow business establishments in that area to operate. Commercial establishments were opened despite repeated warnings to Tagaytay City residents the Taal Volcano may erupt anew. The DILG had ordered the forced evacuation and closure of businesses in Bagong Tubig, Kaybagal South (Poblacion), Maharlika West, Sambong, San Jose, Silang Junction South, Maharlika East, and Tolentino East which are susceptible to base surges and volcanic tsunami if a powerful Taal eruption happens. Densing clarified the DILG order was issued to ensure that business establishments in Tagaytay City were shut down to prevent the influx of local and foreign tourists as Alert Level 4, which warns of hazardous explosive eruption in a few hours or days, remains hoisted.
