Four to five big steel companies in the Philippines had been taken under the post-clearance audit of the Bureau of Customs to ensure that “no irregularities occurred during their past transactions

The move to post-audit these importers came amid investigation on the alleged smuggling and proliferation of substandard steel products due to the collusion between large steelmakers and officials of the Customs bureau.

Maronilla assured “that no effort shall be wasted in making those responsible for the entry of substandard steel liable.” Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero, on the other hand, welcomed House Bill 379 filed by the House of Representatives Committee on Trade and Industry to initiate the probe on the smuggling and proliferation of substandard steel products in the country through the connivance of importers and government officials.

“For its part, the Bureau of Customs shall continue with its efforts to weed out misfits in the agency and has already filed cases against erring Customs employees with the Office of the Ombudsman,” Guerrero said citing the more than 100 customs officers under investigation since July this year.
