FOR the third consecutive day, new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 climbed past 14,000 in a single day on Monday, August 16, 2021.

In its case bulletin, the Department of Health reported 14,610 new cases, 27 additional deaths and 10,674 new recoveries. DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said infections are expected to continue climbing despite the lockdowns being imposed in some areas in the country.“Hindi pa ho natin makikita ang epekto ng ECQ na ipinapatupad natin in some areas of the country. After we end the ECQ period, we still have two to three weeks before we can see the effect of these lockdowns that we are doing right now,” Vergeire said.

Of the total, 106,672 were still active cases, highest in nearly four months since the 107,988 on April 22. Three cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were found to be active cases in hospitals and isolation facilities.
