NEW cases of coronavirus disease 2019 again soared to more than 10,000 and the daily positivity rate climbed to more than 18 percent on Friday, August 6, 2021, as the Department of Health announced the detection of an additional 119 infections caused by the Delta variant.

The 10,623 new infections on Friday were the highest since the 11,101 reported on April 17, 2021 while the 18.4 percent positivity rate was the highest since the 19.5 percent on April 21. The Department of Health also reported 247 deaths, the highest in almost four months since the 401 mortalities recorded on April 9.The new infections brought the cumulative case count to 1,638,345, after the removal of 94 duplicates.

Despite the failure of five laboratories to submit their testing data on August 4 and the non-operation of one laboratory, the testing output increased to 58,372, of which 18.4 percent yielded positive results. The additional deaths, which included 150 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries, raised the Covid-19 death toll to 28,673. The case fatality rate was steady at 1.75 percent.
