tv MANILA - The Philippine Coast Guard has lifted the suspension of the operations of passenger motorbancas in the Iloilo-Guimaras Strait, where 31 people died after 3 wooden-hulled boats sank earlier this month, an official said Tuesday.
Trips are expected to resume early Tuesday after the 10-day suspension, but the weather should be fair and boats should only carry 75 percent of their passenger capacity, said PCG-Western Visayas commander Commodore Allan Dela Vega. Passengers are also required to wear life jackets, instead of just holding these, he told ABS-CBN News.
Squall or sudden violent winds might have caused the Aug. 3 accident in the Iloilo-Guimaras Strait, PCG spokesman Commander Armand Balilo earlier said. Scores of people die each year from ferry accidents in the Philippines, an archipelago of 7,100 islands with a poor record for maritime safety.
