A Catholic priest on Wednesday welcomed President Duterte’s signing of a law declaring September 8 of every year, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a national special working holiday in the entire country.Father Melvin Castro of the Diocese of Tarlac said the declaration is a “cause of joy.”

“It is certainly a cause of joy that the Government and State recognizes the importance of religious and spiritual celebrations,” he said in an interview. A Marian devotee, the priest expressed hope that the celebration will inspire many to “emulate” Mary. “It is our hope and prayer that such celebrations inspire our people to emulate and imitate the virtues of Our Lady,” said Castro. To note, Duterte also signed RA 10966 declaring December 8 of every year a special non-working holiday to commemorate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in 2017.
