Caritas Philippines is preparing an emergency appeal addressed to Caritas Internationalis to help fund the rehabilitation projects following the series of strong earthquakes in Mindanao.

Rev. Fr. Edu Gariguez, executive secretary of Caritas Philippines said the Church is looking beyond relief operations, but more on long-term assistance to the earthquake survivors, particularly those from badly affected areas like North Cotabato.

“We are making an emergency appeal to Caritas Internationalis to help fund the programs for the rehabilitation of badly affected areas in Mindanao. Aside from housing, the survivors are also in need of psycho social assistance as well as livelihood programs,” Gariguez said over Church-run Radio Veritas.

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle is the current president of Rome-based Caritas Internationalis, the Vatican’s social action arm, which has around 160-member countries around the world. According to reports, more than 30,000 families were affected by the series of earthquakes in Mindanao.“Now that reconstruction work has begun, let us also help the survivors by providing them with our moral support especially those residing in Digos, Kidapawan, and in all affected areas. Let us help them rise again from the tragedy and rebuild their lives. Let us also continue to pray for no more earthquakes in Mindanao and the rest of the country,” Tagle said.
