MANILA, Philippines – Consumption-driven economies like the Philippines generate tens of thousands of tons of waste on a daily basis.

Projections by local and foreign experts show that the volume of Philippine waste, currently at 35,000 tons per day, will continue to increase. It also already exceeds the capacity of existing landfills in the country.Rappler talks to Metro Clark Waste Management Corporation directors Rufo Colayco and Holger Holst about new technologies for sanitary landfills and business opportunities in waste management.

Colayco, formerly MCWM’s chairman and chief executive officer, also talks about regulatory barriers and a whole-of-nation approach to reducing waste. In addition, Holger shares his views on waste-to-energy projects and keeping talks with environmental groups open.
