Robert Sicat, a member of the Philippine Rui Lion and Dragon dance group, shows a room full of Chinese lion heads and other props in his house in Manila on Jan. 22, 2022. Sicat expressed dismay over the ban on Chinese New Year festivities, noting its impact on the livelihood of performers and other craftsmen who earn additional income during the annual celebration.

The DOH official commended Manila Mayor Isko Moreno for canceling activities related to the Chinese New Year celebration. Among those prohibited include processions and parades, including Santacruzan; public celebrations such as fairs, variety shows, fireworks displays and other forms of public performances; tournaments and other group contact sports activities; public buffets and boodle fights; and drinking in public places.

Belmonte said all participants of activities that occur outside the home should be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. BOQ deputy director Roberto Salvador Jr. said around 10 to 14 percent of the 3,000 average daily arrivals test positive for the viral illness.
