ILOILO CITY – The Philippine Army’s Third Infantry Division (3ID) will soon be deploying soldiers to schools in Panay Island where Communist New People’s Army (NPA) were said to be recruiting members.

Capt. Cenon Pancito III , chief of the 3rd Infantry Division Public Affairs Office, says on Thursday that West Visayas State University College of Agriculture and Forestry campus in Lambunao, Iloilo has requested Army deployment in their campus to maintain peace and order. Pancito told The Manila Bulletin the army will only deploy in schools known to be hotbeds of insurgency with permission from school administrators, the Department of Education , or Commission on Higher Education .

While 3ID’s plan was supposed to also cover Negros Island, troop deployment will be first implemented in Panay, which is composed of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo provinces. Amidst criticism from student activists, Pancito clarified it was not going to be school militarization.Soldiers are already stationed outside Calinog town campus of West Visayas State University in Iloilo. Pancito said WVSU administration requested it.

But WVSU’s left-leaning student groups slammed the 3ID. In a Friday afternoon protest, they reiterated that student activists were not terrorists. They also accused Pancito of lying, and claimed the WVSU administration never requested the army to stand guard outside its Calinog campus.
