AFP to apologize for viral post

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana disclosed Sunday that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will apologize to the personalities it wrongly tagged as captured and slain communist rebels in a post uploaded by the military in its Facebook account and was shared by some of its units.

(NTF Against COVID-19 / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN)The social media post was widely condemned in social media and became an object of ridicule by netizens since the purported list of University of the Philippines (UP) students captured and killed in military operations include former government officials, lawyers, and even a dead multi-awarded director.

Lorenzana’s response appeared to be an acknowledgment of the mistake committed by the military in coming up with the wrong names of slain and captured UP students. He even went to the extent of calling it as an unpardonable gaffe.“The AFP will apologize. What reason will they give? I don’t know. It’s an unpardonable gaffe,” said Lorenzana.

Lacson to AFP: Censure those responsible in UP red-tagging gaffe“It takes a lot of humility for SND Lorenzana to publicly apologize for the AFP’s blunder. That said, the AFP leadership must see to it that the ones directly responsible for such an error are censured accordingly,' Lacson said. Not only for UP. The other educational institutions mentioned should also be included. You compensate those you maligned. Apology is cheap especially if you have an institution which normalizes peddling of false information. AFP reaction....

Lorenzana’s response appeared to be an acknowledgment of the mistake committed by the military in coming up with the wrong names of slain and captured UP students. He even went to the extent of calling it as an unpardonable gaffe. Aquino said they were looking at filing cyber libel and the"angle of contempt" given that some of those listed, like him, are currently involved in the ongoing litigation of the Anti-Terrorism Act before the Supreme Court. “The AFP will apologize. Lorenzana seeks dialogue with UP Also on Sunday, the Defense chief asked UP to help the government put an end to the alleged communist recruitment activities on its campuses — a claim which the university maintained lacks factual evidence. What reason will they give? I don’t know. Lorenzana said his decision to unilaterally terminate the DND’s deal with UP is a “fulfilment of a patriotic duty,” repeating his earlier statement that the move is meant to protect the youth from what he called enemies of the state. It’s an unpardonable gaffe,” said Lorenzana. But he did not identify them.

Some of the Red-tagged UP alumni called out the AFP for the inclusion of their names and denied that they were captured –much more killed – in military operations. 15. 15. The AFP Facebook post was already taken down but some netizens made screenshots of it, and eventually became the subject of discussions in social media. Some netizens even questioned the military protocol in gathering accurate information, noting the glaring mistake of the names purported captured and slain UP alumni. “Help me fix this. The controversial military post was uploaded at the height of the discussions on the decision of the Department of National Defense (DND) to abrogate an agreement with the UP which states that soldiers could not just enter any of its campus without proper coordination. Let us talk and find ways to end this insurgency once and for all. The agreement, known as the Soto-Enrile accord, does not totally ban soldiers from entering UP campuses as it recognizes military access for conduct of hot pursuit operations and emergency cases. Let us work together and move forward. In a statement on Sunday, Sen.
