RUSSIA has just concluded a three-day joint naval exercise with member-nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations . The exercise, held in the waters off North Sumatra in Indonesia, involved eight warships and four aircraft from Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Brunei.Curiously, the Philippines did not send any of its naval vessels but signed on as a virtual observer.
Political analysts sense that Russia is uncomfortable with the US push in Asia, but it is worried as well about China's fortifications in the South China Sea. 'No one in Russia wants to see either the US or China have hegemony over the strategic straits of Southeast Asia,' one analyst said.As a superpower, Russia must also show the flag in the region. And to do that, it has to cultivate Asean as an ally.
