497 aftershocks after 6.3-magnitude quake in North Cotabato

In a span of 30 hours, up to 497 aftershocks were recorded in different parts of Mindanao following a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that rocked Tulunan, North Cotabato Wednesday night, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Friday.

NDRRMC Executive Director Ricardo Jalad said 223 aftershocks were plotted, which means its origin were known, while eight were felt, with its magnitudes ranging from 1.5 to 5.5 and intensities from I to VII.“This earthquake was not strong enough to generate a tsunami, as Undersecretary [Renato] Solidum has said, but it indeed caused a number of damages from the structures in the affected areas,” said NDRRMC spokesperson Mark Timbal.

Some 613 families or 3,068 individuals were affected in Davao Region (Region 11) and Soccsksargen (Region 12). The casualty count remains at five while 89 others sustained injuries.Most of the residents in Tulunan town, where the epicenter of the quake was plotted, refused to go back to their homes for fear of aftershocks, said Timbal.

Aside from that, two more schools in Region 11; 64 schools in Region 12 and BARMM sustained cracks and other damages.Other damaged infrastructures include two municipal halls in Davao del Sur; seven health facilities, a Sangguniang Bayan building, fire station and municipal hall in Cotabato; seven municipal buildings in Sultan Kudarat; and various places of worship, roads and bridges, and private/commercial establishments in General Santos City.
