Duterte urges incoming DOTr officials to continue improving the railway system

President Rodrigo Duterte, with only a few days left before his term ends, urged incoming Department of Transportation (DOTr) officials to continue improving the country’s railway system.

During the opening of the PNR Lucena-San Pablo Commuter Line, Duterte said that his administration championed programs that filled the gaps in the transport sector.

“Now, I urge DOTr, especially those who will be left behind, and those who will take over the mantle of leadership, to continue leading the improvement of our railway systems,” he said during his speech.

“It is my hope that you will never lose sight of this goal as the enhancement of this vital transportation connection will be the key to unlocking even better opportunities for our countrymen.”

Duterte also thanked DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade and Philippine National Railways (PNR) officials for the opening of the PNR Lucena-San Pablo Commuter Line.

“I have no doubt that the next administration would continue to build and build. The next generation, our sons and daughters by that time would have a perfect mass transport system,” he said.

The President said that it will make places more accessible and easier to manage with an effective mass transport system.

He added that the system could also boost the tourism sector given the attractions and landmarks stationed near the railway terminals.

Duterte said the new railroad would shorten the travel time between San Pablo, Laguna, and Lucena, Quezon from 1 hour to 30 mins.

He added that this was a vital step towards restoring the PNR's Bicol Express that will connect Metro Manila to the provinces in Southern Luzon and the Bicol Region.

“Indeed, this project is proof of our commitment to enhancing mobility and connectivity across the archipelago by improving our routes and bringing convenience to our fellow Filipinos,” Duterte explained.

The President was thankful for the trust given him for the betterment of services and the nation.

“As my term in office comes to a conclusion, I am thankful that I spent my last days as president witnessing events like this and realizing that even amid challenges around us we will leave a legacy that brought meaningful and lasting changes to the lives that we have touched,” he said. — DVM, GMA News
