Magnitude 5.0 quake hits Balut Island, Davao Occidental -- Phivolcs

Another earthquake measuring 5.0-magnitude hit Balut Island, Sarangani town, Davao Occidental province on Saturday evening, Jan. 22, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Based on its earthquake bulletin, Phivolcs said the tremor occurred at around 9:49 p.m., with the epicenter traced 340 kilometers (km) southeast of Balut Island, Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 19 km.

Phivolcs did not record any intensity data from this particular earthquake due to its distance offshore.

Before the 5.0-magnitude quake occurred, a 6.1-magnitude quake was also recorded near Balut Island on Saturday morning.

Phivolcs said there was no threat of a tsunami hitting the country after the occurrence of the strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake.

However, it advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
