BUTUAN CITY - Two mild earthquakes shook Surigao del Sur province Saturday morning, Feb. 22, 2020, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

February 22, 2020, 7:45 AM By Mike Crismundo BUTUAN CITY – Two mild earthquakes shook Surigao del Sur province Saturday morning, Feb. 22, 2020, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. However, the two tremors that struck Saturday morning in this Pacific Ocean facing province did not inflict any damage or injuries, the Surigao del Sur provincial disaster risk reduction and management council there said. In its latest bulletin, Phivolcs said a 2.3 magnitude earthquake was registered at 4:20 a.m. The epicenter was plotted only 6 kilometers (km) away northeast of Bayabas town, Surigao del Sur province. The tremor had a depth of 56 km. Earlier, at 3:06 a.m. of the same day (Feb. 22), a magnitude 2.3 earthquake was also recorded and its epicenter was traced only 2 km away southeast of nearby Cagwait town of that same province. The earthquake had a depth of 17 km. The early Saturday morning earthquakes were tectonic in origin and no tsunami alert was raised by the state agency. Earthquakes are common in the Philippines which sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activities.
