7 killed in Army-NPA encounter in Ilocos Sur
Farmers planting rice in the area are caught in the crossfire

Seven people were killed in an encounter between government troops and the New People’s Army (NPA) Saturday afternoon, August 8, at Sta Lucia town, Ilocos Sur.

Major Rogelio Dumbrigue, Jr of the 2nd Civil-Military Operations Company under the 702nd Infantry Brigade, said that one civilian, 5 NPA members, and one Army soldier died in an hours-long firefight, from 2 pm to sunset, at Barangay Suagayan near the Candon City bypass road.

According to reports, one of the NPA members killed was a female medical officer, while 5 Army soldiers were also injured.

Farmers who were planting rice in the area were caught in the crossfire. The casualty among them was said to be from Barangay Parioc, while two others from Barangay Ayudente were injured.

According to Sta Lucia Mayor Joseph Valdez, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office evacuated about 90 residents from Suagayan, housing them at a barangay plaza in the town center, and only allowed them to drop by their homes Sunday night to check their things and get what they needed.

While the firefight was underway, the provincial government asked residents not to post photos and videos of it online to prevent aggravating the situation.

This is the third such encounter in Ilocos Sur in a month. – Rappler.com
