De Amerikaanse Karen Uhlenbeck is de eerste vrouw die de Abelprijs heeft gewonnen, een prestigieuze prijs voor de wiskunde. Eerder kreeg ze al de Steele-prijs voor haar werk. Bij die gelegenheid hekelde ze de cultuur in haar vakgebied, die ertoe zou leiden dat er zo weinig vrouwen op hoge posities zitten.
De Abelprijs is ingesteld als een soort Nobelprijs voor de wiskunde, al ligt het geldbedrag wel wat lager: geen 900.000 euro, maar 620.000 euro. De prijs is genoemd naar de negentiende-eeuwse Noorse wiskundige Niels Henrik Abel.De jury roemt Uhlenbecks werk en zegt dat zij de wiskunde drastisch heeft veranderd, en prijst haar voor haar strijd voor meer diversiteit binnen de wetenschap en de wiskunde.
Uhlenbeck heeft zich onder meer beziggehouden met 'ijktheorieën', die meer inzicht geven in de wereld van elementaire deeltjes. Haar wiskundige werk overlapt daardoor voor een deel de natuurkunde. Natuurkundige Robbert Dijkgraaf feliciteert haar via Twitter en noemt haar een"fantastische wiskundige" en een"rolmodel".
