Israeli international Eran Zahavi was the star of the show on Wednesday as he bagged a hat-trick for PSV Eindhoven in their 5-1 Champions League second qualifying round first leg thrashing of Turkey’s Galatasaray.
Zahavi opened the scoring after just two minutes and was on the mark again just after the half-hour before completing his treble in the closing minutes. German 2014 World Cup winner Mario Goetze scored a brace while Emre Kilinc netted a consolation as the Dutch hosts all but booked their passage to the third qualifying round where they will play either Scotland’s Celtic or Denmark’s Midtjylland, who parted 1-1 in Glasgow on Tuesday.
Red Star Belgrade, European champions in 1991, had a far more difficult time of it as they lost 2-1 at Kazakh outfit Kairat Almaty for whom Spaniard Jose Kante scored a first-half opener. But Cameroon defender Macky Bagnack, who only recently arrived at Kairat from Serbian SuperLiga club FK Partizan, had the last word with a 79th-minute winner.
Elsewhere, Sweden’s Malmo take a 2-1 advantage to Finland for their second leg after hosting HJK Helsinki.
